Last week, the Right to Self-Defense bill (HB 1134) was facing opposition in the state Senate.

When the bill came before the Senate Judiciary Committee, SDGO asked you to focus grassroots action on the seven committee members.  Thanks to everyone who called or emailed, the bill passed the Senate Judiciary committee yesterday, 6-1.  Democrat Gil Koetzle (Minnehaha Co.) cast the single opposing vote.

Your strong support also helped improve the bill.  HB 1134 had been weakened by an amendment in the House committee.  This was stripped out in the Senate committee and the bill was returned to its original and best form.

HB 1134 must now pass the full Senate.  Your active participation has achieved excellent results so far.  Now is the time to double down and push this bill through.  You can read the different versions of the bill here.

Dear Senator:

I support HB 1134.  It clarifies our state law regarding the defense of life and property, and better recognizes my inalienable right to self-defense.  If HB 1134 is passed, it will give South Dakotans greater security and will help provide safety to families all across the state.

This bill clearly spells out that no one has a duty to retreat from a place they have a right to be.  It recognizes that each man’s home truly is his castle.  I respectfully urge you to vote YES on HB 1134.

Sincerely,
