(Tuesday, January 27, 2004) – Notoriously anti-gun politicians Rep. Tom Hennies (R-Rapid City) and Sen. Gene Abdallah (R-Sioux Falls) have come up with yet another way to trample the Second Amendment.

They have teamed up with Rep. Joni Cutler (R-Sioux Falls) and Sen. Mac McCracken (R-Rapid City) to ratify on the state level the airport “gun free zones” created by unconstitutional, bureaucratic federal regulations.

In reality, such zones are far from gun free and are “safe” only for criminals.  Tests conducted since the federal government took over airport security following 9/11 have demonstrated that weapons are still getting past the metal detectors.  Because criminals do not respect laws or regulations, some of them will still be armed while the law-abiding are defenseless.

The regulations disarming all passengers and mandating these “criminal safety zones” in airports were in full force before 9/11, but did nothing to prevent the terrorist attacks.  On the contrary, they actually contributed to the tragedies by making it impossible for the passengers to effectively defend themselves.  In fact, had any of the passengers been armed, the terrorist attacks might very well have been thwarted.

Now Rep. Cutler and Sen. McCracken, along with Rep. Hennies, Sen. Abdallah and others, have introduced the pointless House Bill 1131 to perpetuate this dangerous ban by entrenching it in state law.

Action:

Please call the House lobby at (605) 773-3851 and leave the following message for your two Representatives:

Please vote NO on anti-gun HB 1131.

Then call the Senate lobby at (605) 773-3821 and leave the same message for your Senator.

As you know, a legislative page should be there to take your call from 8am to 5pm, CST, and will deliver your messages to the legislators’ desks.

If you would like to do more, please contact Rep. Cutler and Sen. McCracken at the numbers and addresses below.  As the primary sponsors of HB 1131, they need to hear your opposition to the bill as a useless infringement on the right to arms.

Tell them:  I strongly oppose anti-gun HB 1131.  Please withdraw your support from the bill.

---Pre-written message---

Dear __________

I oppose HB 1131, which would pointlessly repeat in state law the federally imposed Airport Gun Ban and create so called “weapon free zones” in airports all over the state.

Such zones are hardly free from weapons, and are made safer only for those with criminal intent.  Airport security has been demonstrated to be woefully inadequate since 9/11.  Numerous types of weapons have been overlooked by security and have purposely or inadvertently been carried into the so called “sterile area” in the airport.

HB 1131 is a complete infringement of the right to keep and bear arms, and is no more than “feel good” legislation.  South Dakota does not need to add yet another layer of useless laws.

Please remove your support from HB 1131.

Sincerely,
