(Thursday,
February 26, 2004) – As predicted, anti-gun Senators have been working
overtime to load the gun manufacturer bill, S. 659/1805, with new gun control
amendments.
Unfortunately,
Senator Larry Craig (S. 1805 sponsor and NRA board member) worked with rabid
anti-gunner Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) to accept a "Unanimous Consent
Agreement" which allows a large number of gun control amendments to be
offered to S.1805.
By
pushing this bill to be heard on the floor, and agreeing to hear a slate of gun
control amendments (listed below), Senator Craig has opened up Pandora's Box
of Gun Control.
Just
hours ago, the Senate passed an amendment (by 70-27, for story on this amendment
click
here, or here
for full text) to require Trigger locks.
This is a federal government intrusion on your right to self-defense, and
FAR outweighs any good S.1805's original language would do.
Action:
Call,
e-mail and fax both South Dakota Senators NOW!
There is still time to kill the gun control laden S. 1805.
Tell them to VOTE AGAINST S.1805, now that it has gun control
on it and is likely to contain more.
Your
messages are already having an excellent effect. Sen. Johnson voted against the Trigger Lock amendment.
Sen. Daschle chose to ignore his constituents, and needs to know that you
are watching his vote.

Dear Senator Daschle,
I am appalled at your vote for Sen. Boxer’s Trigger Lock amendment to S. 1805.
Such a measure will do very little to stop crime or reduce accidental death. It will, however, make self-defense much more costly and difficult. If it is passed into law, it may cause the death of thousands who were unable to defend themselves because their safety was locked up.
I respectfully urge you to vote against S. 1805. The gun control provision it now carries far outweighs any good it may originally have done.
I will be watching how you vote, and will remember this fall.
Sincerely,

Dear Senator Johnson,
Thank you for your vote against Sen. Boxer’s Trigger Lock amendment to S. 1805.
The Boxer amendment will do very little to stop crime or reduce accidental death. It will, however, make self-defense much more costly and difficult. If it is passed into law, it may cause the death of thousands who were unable to defend themselves because their safety was locked up.
Unfortunately, the amendment was successful, and S. 1805 carries a gun control provision which far out-ways any good it may originally have done.
I
respectfully urge you to vote against S. 1805, and will be watching how you
vote.
Sincerely,

After agreeing to the "Unanimous Consent Agreement", NRA Board Member Sen. Larry Craig said, "Some of these amendments could pass." In fact, one already has, and other gun control advocates are lining up to join the "fun".
Sen. Craig has agreed to allow a slated list of gun control amendments to S.1805. These include, but are not limited to the following:
Boxer - new
Federal rules for Gun locks
Campbell - Cop-Only Nationwide Carry
Kennedy – “Cop Killer Bullets”
McCain-Reed - Gun Show ban
Feinstein – Semi-auto ban
Frist/Craig – “Cop Killer Bullets”
This last amendment
was offered in reaction to the Kennedy amendment.
Sen. Kennedy’s provision, which bans so-called “Cop Killer
Bullets,” actually wipes out large numbers of hunting rounds (click
here for text). The Frist/Craig
amendment is not as bad as Kennedy’s, but it still denies the right to arms
(unfortunately, Sen. Craig has not yet released the text of his amendment, even
though it was brought up for debate on the Senate floor earlier today).
The amendments
listed above are only the ones that have been announced. Others almost certainly
will be floated.
Please take
action IMMEDIATELY to stop this sell-out of our gun rights!
Tell Senators Daschle and Johnson to VOTE AGAINST S.1805, now
that it has gun control on it and is likely to contain more.
