(Friday, January 31, 2003) – HB 1109 has not yet come up for a vote.  This anti-gun bill would add a photo ID to the concealed pistol permit and could make it easy to add future restrictions

If you have not yet called, or have been unable to get through, there is still time to call today or early Monday morning.

ACTION:  Please call the Capitol at (605) 773-3851and leave the following message for the four committee members listed below.

Tell them: Vote NO on HB 1109

Rep. Mel Olson

Rep. Larry Rhoden

Rep. John Teupel

Rep. Hal Wick

Aside from pointlessly driving up the cost of the permit by duplicating the photo ID that is already on your driver’s license, HB 1109 includes an underhanded attempt to sidestep opposition to future pistol permit restrictions.

A clause in the middle of the bill gives the secretary of state power “to establish procedures, specifications, and requirements” which must be met in obtaining a permit.

If passed, this provision would allow an anti-gun secretary to impose new “requirements” with little accountability to the people of South Dakota.  These new requirements could include fingerprinting, government mandated training, proficiency testing, restricting the age limit, or any number of restrictions already imposed in other states.

It is crucial that these committee members hear from you!
